Sedentary Teens are More Likely to Have Hypertension

Hypertension isn't only a problem facing our older, overweight community. A recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health may be a real eye opener. Researchers found that "couch potato" teenagers are more liekly to have higher blood pressure, regardless of whether they are overweight or not. Although the association between sedentary activity and systolic blood pressure is small NOW, interventions to decrease sedentary activities will have a HUGE impact on public health. Let's start trading some video game "bonding" with a game of sibling basketball, or a family hike. In the long run, wouldn't you rather see your children grow up to become healthy doctors, police officers, or teachers, rather than medicine-poppers that could have been avoided a long time ago?
